Lifestyle medicine is a rapidly expanding interdisciplinary field within medicine that focuses on therapeutic lifestyle interventions for primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of noncommunicable chronic diseases. Lifestyle medicine has been applied across multiple disciplines and specialties within healthcare. Lifestyle medicine and rehabilitative medicine both aim to address health restoration and improvement of physical function and quality of life for individuals across the care continuum.
The main pillars of lifestyle medicine can be categorized into nutrition, physical activity, stress reduction, social connectivity, avoidance of risky substances, and restful sleep. Physiatrists, alongside the entire interdisciplinary healthcare team, can support therapeutic lifestyle interventions through the application of these pillars in clinical practice.
This workshop will aim to address the following concepts of Lifestyle Medicine
Introduction and definition of lifestyle medicine
The connection of lifestyle medicine to chronic disease and its intersection with rehabilitative medicine
Application of the six pillars of lifestyle medicine in rehab settings
Effective and reimbursable delivery models for successful application of lifestyle medicine in rehabilitation settings
The role of the physiatrist in incorporating lifestyle medicine principals into existing rehabilitative medicine care delivery and treatment plans.
An exploration of the tools and resources to support the integration of lifestyle medicine
