Knowledge acquisition is not a straight path. Knowledge is generally acquired in one of two ways: through lessons learned (being taught) or from lessons directly experienced, i.e., lived. Philosopher Immanuel Kant classified knowledge sourced from personal experience as “a posteriori knowledge” and knowledge derived without a basis in experience (i.e., by reasoning alone) as “a priori knowledge.” In the world of medical sciences, the idea of lived experience (a posteriori) in combination with knowledge bases learned (a priori) is a powerful concept that may accelerate science, engineering and even healthcare. The purpose of this symposium is to recognize and explore how the lived experience of scientists, clinicians, and people outside the profession who are living with disability can inform rehabilitative practice and provide valuable insights for research and theory within the profession. Also examined will be the challenges researchers with a disability encounter.
