Active and Passive Digital Health Technology Measurements in People with Physical Disabilities 1207

Digital health technologies (DHTs) – often classified as active and passive DHTs - have revolutionized health monitoring for individuals with physical disabilities. Active DHTs require participants to interact intentionally with technology, providing real-time subjective data through tools such as ecological momentary assessments. This approach enables personalized interventions but requires consistent user engagement and may be influenced by biases. Conversely, passive DHTs collect data continuously and unobtrusively using embedded sensors, offering objective insights into health behaviors while minimizing participant effort. However, challenges such as technical issues and privacy concerns persist. Understanding and utilizing both active and passive DHTs is vital for improving rehabilitation outcomes. In our symposium, we will explore the applications of these technologies in rehabilitation research, discuss implementation strategies, and share findings from two NIH-funded studies that illustrate their potential to advance rehabilitation research and practices.

  • Upon completion, the participant will be able to define two main types of Digital Health Technologies.
  • Upon completion, the participant will be able to describe the procedure for evaluating the validity of wearable devices-based physical activity intensity classification algorithms.
  • Upon completion, the participant will be able to demonstrate how to use ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) to assess real-time daily activity.
