Rehabilitation Treatment Specification in the Electronic Health Record: From Conceptualization to Routine Use 1174

The Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System offers a framework to more adequately specify rehabilitation treatments and may serve to better capture interventions in the electronic health record (EHR).  In this symposium, we present a project that structured our EHR in accordance with the RTSS to better specify pilot intervention documentation (in gait, dysphagia, and activities of daily living), and the benefits and challenges of integrating the RTSS in the EHR. Benefits related to clinical decision-making, mentoring, and data extraction as well as challenges regarding documentation design and clinical adoption will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify how the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS) can improve real-world treatment documentation for physical and occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists
  • Describe the benefits of using the RTSS in clinical documentation for clinical-reasoning and data extraction
  • Discuss barriers to using the RTSS in clinical documentation including information technology burden, clinical adoption and training needs
