Art Therapy intern Access Living Chicago, IL, United States
In the field of rehabilitation research, most researchers and practitioners understands illness and disabilities through the lens of the medical model. It's time to integrate creativity and art into our practice! This Fireside chat will present slideshows by three Chicago-based artists who explore and document their experiences with chronic illness and disabilities through a wide range of art media and art making processes. As a part of the larger Disability Art movement, artist Lillian Heredia’s work grapples with her experiences with religion, sustenance farming, chronic pain, and motherhood through the lens of her background in biology. Genevieve Ramos is a painter and disability advocate whose work explores feminism and disability through vivid acrylics and pop culture influences. She discovered her passion for painting after surviving a car accident at age 20, which led her to use art as a means of healing and self-expression. Gabriela (Gabi) Tahsuda is a disabled artist studying Art Therapy and Counseling at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Gabi’s art practice mixes comics, bead work, wearable art to explore disability, identity, and resilience. Audience will learn ways that disabled artists process, understand and theorize illness and disability. This fireside chat aims to offer new language and perspectives on disability representation. It intends to facilitate a conversation for researchers and practitioners to consider ways to integrate disability art and culture in their practice.
