Katie Johnson is an ABC-certified prosthetist/orthotist for Hanger Clinic in Cincinnati, Ohio. Katie earned her certificates in orthotics and prosthetics from Northwestern University; a Master of Science degree in biomedical engineering from the University of California-Davis; and a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical and biomedical engineering from Tufts University. She is a member of the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists (AAOP), Women in Orthotics & Prosthetics of AAOP, and is the lead member of the AAOP Publications Committee Literature Update Working Group. Katie has taken part in many research projects over her career ranging from high school, during college, grad school and in her OP career. Her research projects have varied in background from matrix isolation in a Chemistry lab, investigating Achilles tendon injuries using ultrasound, researching methods to grow an ACL using silk matrices and stem cells, evaluating the effectiveness of mirror therapy for patients with phantom limb pain, evaluating the effect of a tuned AFO on balance within the stroke population, developing a novel research method to evaluate displacements within the socket of prosthetic users, and investigating within day changes in residual limb changes in transtibial amputees. In between graduate school for engineering and changing careers to the O&P field, Katie ran a motion analysis laboratory for the University of Michigan Bone and Joint Center. She has been the principal investigator on many of these projects, specifically within the O&P field.
Katie has taught Upper Extremity Prosthetics at Eastern Michigan University and was a residency mentor for five years. For the past 15 years, she has been a frequent presenter at the Academy Annual meeting. Katie has also authored seven peer reviewed papers, six book chapters, and an article for ‘The Academy Today’ publication.
