Dr. Leah Russell Flaherty is a licensed clinical psychologist and the Clinical Director of the Empowered Relief program at Allegheny Health Network (AHN). Dr. Flaherty received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University, followed by a Masters of Arts in Forensic Psychology from Marymount University, and a Doctor of Psychology in Counseling Psychology from Carlow University. She completed an APA-accredited predoctoral internship at the Charles George VA Medical Center and a postdoctoral fellowship in Pain Psychology at Allegheny Health Network.
Dr. Flaherty specializes in evidence-based interventions for chronic pain, with a focus on the brain-body connection and self-management strategies. At AHN, she delivers Empowered Relief (ER), an evidence-based single-session pain intervention. She provides training and outreach to advocate for pain psychology interventions as standard of care. She actively measures outcomes and disseminates findings on pain and quality of life improvements post-intervention. Dr. Flaherty is dedicated to building a team focused on integrating health literacy and single-session interventions into stepped-care models for chronic pain treatment.
Dr. Flaherty is an active presenter and speaker, frequently invited to share her expertise on topics ranging from chronic pain management to emotional intelligence. Her research has been published in journals such as Pain Reports and Psychiatry Research. She is a member of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association, the American Association of Suicidology, the Society for Health Psychology, and the American Psychological Association.
