Research Scientist
The Ohio State University
I am a research scientist at the Ohio State University Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. My research focuses on understanding the risk factors for the development of secondary conditions, including metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases, with the goal of developing dietary and lifestyle interventions to improve the health and function of individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI).
I completed my Ph.D. training at Purdue University, where I evaluated the impact of dietary modifications on human metabolic health in healthy individuals, with a focus on meal composition and postprandial glucose metabolism using meal glucose tolerance tests. I obtained extensive knowledge and training in conducting clinical nutrition research trials. Furthermore, I earned a graduate certificate in applied statistics, which equipped me with advanced statistical analysis skills and led to my appointment as a statistical review board member of the American Society of Nutrition.
I completed my 6-year postdoctoral training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham focusing on the relationship between nutrition and metabolic health in individuals with SCI. I lead the UAB SCI Model System site-specific project that investigates the effects of a high-protein low-carbohydrate diet on metabolic health among individuals with chronic SCI (grant # NIDILRR 90SI5019, funding period: 2016-2022). I am responsible for IRB protocol management, participant recruitment, study coordination with multiple UAB core facilities, data management and analysis, as well as result interpretation/dissemination. I have obtained prestigious postdoctoral fellowships from the NIDILRR and Craig Neilsen Foundation, to further advance my training in clinical trials in SCI, biostatistics, and metabolic heath. At OSU, I am continuing to expand my experience and expertise in the area of nutrition and SCI.
