Division Chief, Spine Care and Pain Management
Harvard Medical School
My clinical and academic work focuses on the non-operative care of complex and painful spinal disorders. As an interventional spine and pain physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist, my practice spans multiple institutions within Harvard, including Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Faulkner Hospital. My academic work centers on teaching Harvard Medical Students, physical medicine and rehabilitation and internal medicine residents in both lecture and clinical settings. My academic work involves the diagnosis and treatment of spine conditions. I am actively involved in the editing and reviewing process for several publications, writing of review articles and book chapters, and also some clinical research. I am actively involved in the development of the Spine Service Line at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. .
The treatment of painful spine conditions is my area of excellence. My clinical expertise and reputation has lead to a continually growing practice that spans multiple institutions and draws broadly from the New England Region. This has culminated in my appointment as Medical Director of the Comprehensive Spine Care Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In this capacity, I work with multiple disciplines to lead the development of a collaborative spine center that integrates several non-surgical and surgical disciplines to provide patients with the most comprehensive treatment options. In addition to my leadership responsibilities in the spine center, I also function as Director of Interventional Physiatry for the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. In this capacity, I lead a group of 6 interventional physiatrists, and provide leadership for issues pertaining to credentialing, clinical, and research activities.
I am actively involved in teaching and education in several settings. I direct the Brigham and Women’s spine/ musculoskeletal rotation. During this rotation, Harvard Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residents work intensely with me on developing their clinical, teaching, and writing skills. During this rotation, residents present a spine related lecture, or write a case report or book chapter under my supervision. I also regularly provide them lectures on the physical examination of the spine during their didactic series. In addition to the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residents, I regularly have Harvard Internal Medicine residents work with me during their outpatient rotations.
In my clinical and academic endeavors, I strive to improve patient care and resident education. I have been given the distinguished privilege of medical director leadership of the Brigham Comprehensive Spine Center, and Division Director of Interventional Physiatry and Spine Care at Harvard, and Associate Chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. I continue to enjoy participating in academic publishing in the field of spine and pain related care, and will hope to continue and further develop such efforts.
