Biographical Sketch – Dr. Richard S. Burns, MD
Dr. Richard S. Burns earned his BS in Biological Sciences (and MD from the University of Minnesota. He completed a rotating internship at French Hospital in San Francisco, followed by residencies in Internal Medicine at Huntington Memorial Hospital and in Neurology at the University of California, Irvine. He later pursued advanced research training in biochemical pharmacology as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the NIH’s Pharmacology Research Associate Training Program.
Dr. Burns began his research and clinical career at the NIH, serving as a Medical Staff Fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health and as a Senior Staff Fellow in the Surgical Neurology Branch of the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke. He went on to hold academic and leadership positions at several prestigious institutions, including Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where he was Associate Professor with appointments in Neurology, Pharmacology, and Psychiatry, and Chief of the Division of Movement Disorders.
He later directed movement disorders programs at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Southern Illinois University, where he also led the Parkinson Disease Center and the Laboratory of Proteomic Research. At the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Dr. Burns held multiple leadership roles, including Director of the Movement Disorders Program, the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Research Center, the Neuro-Proteomics and Clinical Mass Spectrometry Laboratory, and the Neurohospitalist Program.
More recently, Dr. Burns served as Staff Neurologist, Director of Neuroscience Research, and Chief of the Division of Neurology at the Phoenix VA Health Care System. In parallel, he has transitioned into medical innovation and entrepreneurship as the Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Gravitrex Inc, focusing on advanced mobility and neurological health technologies.
