Medical Student
Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Shravya Chanamolu is a fourth year medical student at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM). She started exploring her interest in health and medicine in high school as a member and student leader of a few organizations, including the Future Health Professionals of America. Those experiences pushed her to seek out some exposure to research and worked as a full-time Research Assistant Volunteer during a summer in high school in Dr. Ajay Rana’s lab at the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Medicine, where she learned about different approaches to cancer research. She continued to pursue her newfound interest in research as an undergraduate student at Michigan State University, where she worked with Dr. Yuan Wang and her team to better understand spermatogonial germ cell development and the causes of infertility in males by using mouse models. As a medical student in her preclerkship years, she had the opportunity to explore clinical research with human participant interaction at Wayne State University’s Trauma History Investigation of Neurodevelopment in Kids (THINK) Lab under Dr. Hilary Marusak’s mentorship to explore her interest in neuroscience.
Through her clerkship rotations and electives, she discovered the physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) specialty and was eager to pursue research in the field. Dr. Anna Kratz and Dr. Daniel Whibley mentored and ultimately gave her the opportunity to work on her own project. She chose to investigate how sleep disturbance can impact cognitive and physical function in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) for her first project, and she hopes to continue working in this lab to identify other possible predictors of functional change in this population. Overall, she is excited to continue participating in clinical research and further explore how she can combine her research interests with her future career goals as a physician.
