Professor and Vice Chair
University of Washington
As a clinical psychologist, professor, and vice chair in the University of Washington (UW) Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, I have been the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on numerous extramurally funded research grants, including more than 25 randomized controlled trials evaluating the effects of nonpharmacological and self-management interventions for chronic pain, fatigue, and/or depression in adults with multiple sclerosis (MS) and other acquired neurologic conditions. I have conducted efficacy and comparative effectiveness trials evaluating cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based interventions, and self-hypnosis training for chronic pain, depression, and fatigue in adults with MS. My scientific expertise is in clinical trial design and implementation, behavioral intervention development, therapist training, treatment fidelity, and telehealth interventions. I hold the UW Nancy and Buster Alvord Endowed Professorship in Multiple Sclerosis Research, a recognition of my contributions to the MS research field. I also have extensive scientific leadership experience, including as the recent editor of Rehabilitation Psychology and section editor of Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. I chair the National MS Society’s Psychosocial Wellness Research Workgroup and serve on their National Scientific Advisory Committee. I also serve on NIH's National Advisory Board on Medical Rehabilitation Research, National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research.
