Co-Director, Pathokinesiology Laboratory
Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center
Dr. Jeffery W. Rankin, MSE, PHD, is the Director of the Pathokinesiology Laboratory and Rehabilitation Engineering Program at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. He received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University and his MSE and PhD in Musculoskeletal Biomechanics from the University of Texas at Austin. With over 15 years of experience conducting and leading movement biomechanics research spanning sport and clinical rehabilitation settings, Dr. Rankin’s primary interests are in better understanding the complex interplay between neuromuscular capacity and control, disability, and assistive technologies during movement. His work has been primarily translational in nature, focusing on understanding neuromuscular principles and developing devices that have a practical application (e.g., designing non-circular chainrings to improve cycling performance, evaluating links between wheelchair propulsion techniques and musculoskeletal demand). In his current position at Rancho, Dr. Rankin currently oversees multiple federally funded research projects aimed at developing and testing new rehabilitation interventions and associated technologies for those living with physical disability. Dr. Rankin’s research aligns fully with his role in overseeing Rancho’s motion analysis service that provides surgical and rehabilitation recommendations for individuals with complex movement disorders (congenital and acquired).
