Assistant Professor of Exercise Science
Marshall University
Brandon Jones is an Assistant Professor of Exercise Science at Marshall University. Dr. Jones received his PhD in exercise physiology at the University of Northern Colorado in 2023 while working as a certified strength and conditioning specialist. His doctoral projects include creatine supplementation, chemotherapy dysfunction in skeletal muscle, hormonal treatments effect on physical activity, and puberty blocking treatments influence on reproductive recovery in rats. This strong background in basic science animal research compliments his athlete and human performance focus as a strength and conditioning expert.
Dr Jones’ started his research journey at the University of Wisconsin Lacrosse where he focused on human performance, kinesiology tape and delayed onset muscle soreness. This led him to Northern Michigan University to continue exercise science research. His master’s thesis focused on the influence of sauna use and stimulation of heat shock proteins to increase skeletal muscle hypertrophy while resistance training. Dr. Jones returned to his human based applied research as a faculty member at Marshall University starting in 2023.
At Marshall University Dr. Jones has started rock climbing research due to its rapid expansion as a new Olympic sport and as a personal passion project. Multiple students have presented research with him at the West Virginia Capital Research Day over the past two years. His current project focuses on the use of rock climbing as a rehabilitation modality. As a novel and expanding sport rock climbing training modalities require further research and Dr. Jones is pioneering it. He focuses on undergraduate and graduate student based research while teaching four credit per semester at Marshall.
