Dr. Elroy Aguiar is an Assistant Professor of Exercise Science in the Department of Kinesiology at The University of Alabama. He earned his PhD in Human Physiology from the University of Newcastle, Australia, where his doctoral research focused on diet and exercise interventions for the prevention of type 2 diabetes.
His academic career spans research and teaching roles in Australia and the United States, including a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Dr. Aguiar’s research emphasizes physical activity measurement, cadence-based metrics, and walking interventions to improve health outcomes across the lifespan. He has led and contributed to multiple funded projects, including NIH- and foundation-supported studies, and has published extensively in leading journals in exercise science, public health, and rehabilitation.
He is recognized with numerous awards, including the ASICS Medal for Best Paper Overall at Sports Medicine Australia’s “Be Active” conference, and the Excellence in Academic Advising Award from The University of Alabama. His work continues to advance the role of step-based physical activity metrics in both clinical and community health contexts.
