Dr. Hon K. Yuen is a Professor and Director of Research in the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Yuen earned his professional training in occupational therapy at the University of Queensland (Australia) and completed his doctoral work at the University of Florida, where he specialized in research evaluation and measurement methodology. Since 2002, he has served as principal investigator on multiple funded projects supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and foundation grants.
His research explores innovative rehabilitation strategies, including:
- Arts‑based interventions (e.g. expressive writing, storytelling, theater, dance, magic, and video games) as tools to improve quality of life for people with chronic conditions.
- The use of exergaming (interactive video games that promote physical activity) to increase motivation and adherence to home‑based exercise programs.
- Studies on the mental health benefits of urban park use and green spaces as part of community health.
