Philip S. Requejo, PhD, is the Chief Executive Officer of the Rancho Research Institute and Project Director of the Southern California Spinal Cord Injury Model System (SoCal-SCIMS) at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. He also holds adjunct faculty positions in the Department of Kinesiology and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern California. With over 25 years of research experience, Dr. Requejo has focused on rehabilitation engineering and biomechanics, aiming to improve mobility and quality of life for individuals with spinal cord injury, stroke, and cerebral palsy.
Dr. Requejo earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from California State University Long Beach and his Ph.D. in Kinesiology and Biomechanics from the University of Southern California. His research centers on developing technologies to enhance function and prevent secondary complications, especially among manual wheelchair users. He has led several major projects, including co-directing the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Centers on Spinal Cord Injury and on Aging with a Disability. He also served as principal investigator on a telehealth and biofeedback sensor project to prevent pressure ulcers in people with spinal cord injury. Currently, he leads SoCal-SCIMS, which promotes wellness and community reintegration for individuals with spinal cord injury through integrated services and applied research. Dr. Requejo actively contributes to the field through his involvement in professional organizations, including the American Spinal Injury Association, where he serves on the Awards and Membership Committees. He has reviewed for numerous journals and funding agencies and has received several awards for his research, including recognition for his work in wheelchair propulsion biomechanics.
