Personal Statement
It is a privilege to be a VA Research Scientist investigator since 2013. I have been continuously funded by Rehabilitation Research and Development Service (RR&D) for our investigations in Veterans with spinal cord injury (SCI) since 2013. Currently, I am a Research Scientist at the Hines VA, Scientific Chair of the Arms + Hands Lab at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, and a Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University. I have studied neural mechanisms contributing to the control of voluntary movement in healthy humans and in individuals with SCI for over 15 years. I have a demonstrated record of successful and productive research projects and leadership in this area. I have advised and mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Several of them have achieved independent faculty positions. I am an Ad-hoc Member of the Department of Veterans Affairs, RR&D Service Study Section and a full member of the Function, Integration, and Rehabilitation Sciences (FIRS) study section. I am a member of the Board of Advisors for The National Center for Neuromodulation in Rehabilitation (NM4R). I was awarded the Outstanding Neurorehabilitation Clinician Scientist Award by the American Society of Neurorehabilitation in 2017, the NINDS Research Program Award (R35) in 2021, and the Sir Ludwig Guttmann Award by the International Spinal Cord Society in 2022.
