Dr. Kathryn Schmitz is the interim director of University of Pittsburgh Hillman Cancer Center, a professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine as well as the director of UPMC Moving through Cancer Program. She is the past president of the American College of Sports Medicine and an author of the book Moving through Cancer, published in 2021.
She has published more than 350 articles and has significantly influenced the standard of care in cancer treatment to include exercise in national guidelines. Her research has been published in high-impact journals, including JAMA and the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Her seminal research laid the foundation for the development of exercise oncology guidelines, and she was the lead author of the first ACSM Roundtable on Exercise for Cancer Survivors. She is the winner of many awards, including being the only cancer researcher to win the prestigious Lifetime Impact Award from the Presidents Council on Fitness.
