Elliot J. Roth, MD is the Paul B. Magnuson Professor & Chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine (NUFSM), Chair of Rehabilitation Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and Director of the NIDILRR-funded Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Enhancing Community Living through Increasing Participation and Self-Efficacy Among People with Physical Disabilities (ELCIPSE) at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, where he also serves as Attending Physician in the Brain Innovation Center. Dr. Roth has directed grant-supported research in stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and spinal cord injury (SCI) for more than 35 years, and he recently completed an NIH R01-supported clinical trial focused on arm use in people with stroke. He has published more than 180 papers, and he has overseen the mentorship and training of more than 500 trainees. His research interests focus on novel methods to enhance recovery, improve functional outcomes, and prevent associated medical conditions for people with disabling conditions. He continues to have an active medical practice, focusing on people with SCI, TBI, stroke and other neurological conditions. A passionate supporter of the team approach to care and research, for which he has won a national award, Dr. Roth emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration in his clinical and academic activities. He is Board Certified in PM&R and Brain Injury Medicine, and he is the Director of the Brain Injury Fellowship Program. He is widely recognized as a leading expert in interdisciplinary neurorehabilitation and has been honored with many awards from national organizations. He previously served on the Board of Directors for Access Living, the local Center for Independent Living, and now serves on Boards of several other nonprofit organizations.
