Dr. Mariana Garcia Torres, Ph.D, is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois, Chicago with a Ph.D. in Disability Studies. Her research focuses on disability, Latino communities, and inclusive practices, with expertise in qualitative and mixed methods, program evaluation, and knowledge translation. Her work centers around educational programs for Latino families of preadolescents with autism in both the U.S. and Colombia. A key aspect of her work is the integration of sexuality education into the parent training curriculum, addressing a critical but often overlooked aspect of adolescent development for youth with disabilities. Dr. Garcia Torres currently serves as Co-PI on multiple federally funded projects under the ADA National Network, leading studies on Spanish-language outreach, mental health and employment, and the impact of COVID-19 on disability and education. In addition to her research, she actively collaborates with community-based organizations in Chicago and develops and teaches courses on disability in Latino communities.
