Section Chief Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Innovation Center
Shirley Ryan Abilitylab
Chicago, IL, United States
I am the Section Chief of the Pediatric Innovative Center at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. I completed both my PM&R residency training & Pediatric PM&R Fellowship at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago in 1997-2002. As a practicing pediatric physiatrist for the past 23 years, I have provided collaborative treatment for children and young adults across the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab continuum of care from inpatient, day rehabilitation and outpatient, as well as through our global international program. I perform inpatient consults at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago to determine if patients qualify for outpatient or inpatient therapy treatment. We treat complex patients with a myriad of neurologic and orthopedic etiologies including traumatic brain injuries, post infectious or stroke conditions, and movement disorders including cerebral palsy to name a few conditions. I also direct an interdisciplinary chronic pediatric pain program in collaboration with child psychology. At the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab our patients receive holistic care in an interdisciplinary manner from assessment through treatment planning and goal setting working in a collaborate manner with SLP, OT, PT, nursing and pediatric subspecialists. We work to optimize patients’ functional capacity fully integrating him or her into their home, school and community environment. I have also written three book chapters related to chronic pain and the treatment in the adolescent population. We have also published data on our experience evaluating the impact that pain diagnoses have on pain and function.
