Director, Cancer Survivorship and Rehabilitation
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
Beverly Hills, CA, United States
Dr. Arash Asher, MD has served as the Director of Cancer Survivorship & Rehabilitation at Cedars-Sinai Cancer since 2008. He has a special interest in the physical and rehabilitative needs of cancer survivors who continue to experience the effects of their cancer or its treatment. In his clinical work, he often encounters common cancer survivorship concerns, including cancer-related fatigue, chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, cognitive changes, and existential distress, among others. His clinical expertise involves managing these symptoms from a rehabilitation and integrative perspective since many of his patients are interested in non-pharmacologic treatment options. Dr. Asher has helped lead the development a number of unique cancer survivorship programs with his colleagues, including Emerging from the Haze (living with the perceived effects of cancer treatment on cognition), GRACE (Growing Resilience and Courage) and others with the goal of optimizing physical, psychological, and spiritual resilience for patients with cancer. His research reflects his clinical work. He regularly serves as PI, MPI, and Co-I on diverse clinical trials seeking to improve the quality and duration of cancer survivorship, including interventions seeking to reduce distress of cancer survivors (NCT03824132) and identify non-pharmacologic interventions for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (NCT04185610, NCT04403802). He served as co-PI for the externally funded GRACE (Growing Resilience And CouragE) program to optimize resiliency and spiritual well-being in the context of metastatic cancer (NCT02707510). He has also helped lead the development and evolution of a cognitive rehabilitation clinical program and research study, Emerging from the Haze, to support the self-efficacy of survivors struggling with cognitive challenges (NCT02360917). Dr. Asher completed a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at the UCLA/Greater Los Angeles VA, and a cancer rehabilitation fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
