PM&R Vice Chair of Research; Belford Center Director of Clinical Research
The Ohio State University
Dr. Ceren Yarar-Fisher is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Neuroscience at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. She serves as the Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and as the Director of Clinical Research at the Belford Center for Spinal Cord Injury.
Dr. Yarar-Fisher earned her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation from Baskent University in Ankara, Turkey. She then completed her PhD in Neuromechanics at Auburn University, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship focusing on spinal cord injury, skeletal muscle biology, nutrition, and metabolism at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Her translational research laboratory investigates the pathophysiology of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) in both acute and chronic stages. The primary aim is to develop novel nutritional and rehabilitation strategies to enhance neurorecovery, metabolic function, and microbiome composition. Her team integrates SCI metadata (e.g., age, sex, injury level and severity, years post-injury), clinical data (e.g., neurological function, spasticity, muscle strength, metabolic and bowel function, mental health), and experimental data (e.g., metagenomics and metabolomics) into a comprehensive database to facilitate more complete health assessments and inform optimal treatment and prevention strategies.
