Director, Centers for Neuropsychology, Neuroscience and TBI Research
Kessler Foundation
I am Director of Centers for Neuropsychology and Neuroscience and of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Research at Kessler Foundation, Research Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rutgers University-NJ Medical School, and a licensed psychologist in NJ and NY. I have served as Project Director of the Northern NJ Traumatic Brain Injury Model System, one of 16 federally designated Model Systems of research and care for persons with TBI in the US, continuously since 2009. Through this work, I have collaborated with numerous TBI experts throughout the country with whom I have accumulated several highly impactful publications. Since the start of my professional career in 2001, I have successfully obtained over 20 million dollars in grant funding, including grants from the NIH, Department of Defense (DoD), the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS), the Canadian Multiple Sclerosis Society (CMSS), the New Jersey Commission on Traumatic Brain Injury Research (NJCBIR), the New Jersey Commission on Spinal Cord Injury Research (NJCSCIR), the New Jersey Health Foundation (NJHF), the Carl Nielson Foundation and the National Stroke Association. Many of these grants have funded Randomized Clinical Trials in individuals with Multiple Sclerosis (MS; NIH, NMSS, CMSS), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI; NIDILRR, NJCBIR), Spinal Cord Injury (SCI; NJCSCIR, NIDILRR) and aging (NJHF, NIA). Results from these randomized clinical trials have been published in high impact Neurology and Rehabilitation journals (e.g., Neurology, Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair) and the first of our training programs has been adopted into clinical practice at 29 centers internationally. I currently have over 200 peer-reviewed publications and have made hundreds of national and international presentations. I additionally dedicate much of my time to mentoring post-doctoral fellows having had over 2 dozen postdoctoral fellows throughout my career. I have been the recipient of several early career awards from national organizations and am looked upon as an expert in the fields of cognitive rehabilitation, processing speed, and cognition in MS and TBI.
