Gary J. Farkas, PhD, MSCTI, Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, is a leading researcher in metabolism and weight management after spinal cord injury (SCI). As the originator of the terminology and definition of neurogenic obesity, his work focuses on the biobehavioral mechanisms underlying obesity and cardiometabolic dysfunction, emphasizing body composition, appetite, energy balance, dietary intake, and metabolic adaptation following SCI. He has conducted clinical trials using state-of-the-art body composition techniques such as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, computed tomography, air displacement plethysmography, and bioelectrical impedance analysis to assess adiposity, lean mass, and cardiometabolic dysregulation in individuals with chronic SCI. Additionally, Dr. Farkas's current research investigates the role of appetite regulation, high-protein diets, energy balance, and autonomic regulation in weight management and as key contributors to post-injury obesity for individuals with SCI.
