Director of Clinical Research
American Sports Medicine Institute
Dr. Matthew Ithurburn is a clinician-scientist and the Director of Clinical Research at the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI). With a clinical background as a sports medicine physical therapist, Dr. Ithurburn’s commitment to research in individuals with lower extremity injuries grew out of his clinical practice and patient care experiences. Observing inconsistent rehabilitation outcomes, he was motivated to investigate factors that could improve treatment for these patients.
The focus of Dr. Ithurburn’s PhD training was outcomes research, which included expertise in measuring function, biomechanics, and quantitative magnetic resonance imaging, primarily in individuals with knee and hip injuries. During this time, he also helped develop and lead multiple prospective cohort studies.
As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Dr. Ithurburn expanded this work further, leading a collaborative research team that evaluated associations among joint function, device-measured physical activity, and pain in individuals with knee injuries and intra-articular hip pathology, including those with anterior cruciate ligament injuries, femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS), and acetabular dysplasia.
At ASMI, Dr. Ithurburn now leads a broad portfolio of sports medicine clinical research aimed at evaluating surgical outcomes, rehabilitation efficacy, and injury mechanisms to improve the prevention and treatment of sports-related orthopedic injuries. The scope of ASMI clinical research includes retrospective outcomes studies using data repositories, functional and physical activity–based longitudinal studies, and surgical and biologic clinical trials. Many of these projects are designed in collaboration with sports medicine clinical partners at ASMOC and are led and managed by the ASMI clinical research team. Together, this team has developed a robust and seamless infrastructure for the recruitment, enrollment, and follow-up testing of clinical populations at ASMOC.
Altogether, Dr. Ithurburn’s clinical background, leadership role and team at ASMI, strong collaborations with ASMOC, and extensive research experience position him to successfully lead this scoping review and interpret its findings.
