Shane J.T. Balthazaar (PhD, RDCS, FASE, FHEA) is an experienced healthcare professional and academic specializing in cardiovascular physiology, sonography, and spinal cord injury (SCI) research. He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Birmingham’s School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences in the United Kingdom, where he investigates cardiovascular health and autonomic function in various populations. His main research currently focuses on the effects of exercise interventions on cardiovascular function, with a particular interest in the role of neuromodulation and exercise training to improve cardiovascular outcomes in the SCI population.
In addition to his research, Dr. Balthazaar has an extensive clinical background in cardiology. He has worked as an Echocardiographer at Vancouver General Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital in British Columbia, Canada, and most recently at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust in the UK. His expertise extends to education, having served as Faculty at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), where he taught in the School of Health Sciences. At the University of Birmingham, recognized as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), he teaches the Cardiovascular Physiology module for a second year Applied Exercise Physiology course and supervises undergraduate dissertation projects.
Dr. Balthazaar earned his PhD in Cardiac Physiology and Autonomic Function from the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine and holds an Honours Bachelor of Science Kinesiology from McMaster University. He is actively involved in professional organizations, serving as a committee member for Credentialing Exams and Professional Practice at Sonography Canada and is recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE).
