My career focus is neurorehabilitation of co-occurring alcohol use disorder and mild traumatic brain injury (AUD+mTBI). Specifically, I seek to improve neurorehabilitation by developing neuroscience-informed treatments for complex co-occurring neuropsychiatric conditions. Investigating the neural underpinnings of complex co-occurring neuropsychiatric conditions will lead to optimal treatment development and customized medicine. I trained in the VA to be a leader in the field of neurorehabilitation. I completed VA HSR&D and Polytrauma/TBI fellowships, as well as, a NIDILHRR Merit Switzer Research fellowship allowing me to transition from a pre-clinical to a clinical neuroscientist. I completed my VA RR&D Career Development Award, Level-II (CDA-II) in 2020. I am currently the PI of an ongoing VA RR&D Merit, which is a natural extension of the CDA-II, to identify a neural target unique to Veterans with co-occurring AUD+mTBI and to test the efficacy of this target as a stimulation site for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment to maximize functional recovery. I was also the PI of a recently completed VA RR&D Small Projects in Rehabilitation Research (SPiRE) award which tested the feasibility, acceptability, safety and preliminary effect of a combined TMS and yoga intervention for Veterans with mTBI and co-occurring chronic musculoskeletal pain.
