Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner
University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
Houston, TX, United States
I am a graduate of the University of Rochester School of Nursing BSN program and from the University of Texas Health Science School of Nursing MSN program. Since 2004, I have been in a APRN role with the department of Stem Cell Transplantation (SCT) and Cellular Therapy at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Throughout my professional career, I have been part of many collaborative efforts with multidisciplinary team members focusing on improving patient care.
I have long collaborated with our institution’s rehabilitation teams; treating and assessing for early signs in debilitation, fatigue, and other factors that have led to deconditioning in Stem Cell Transplant (SCT) recipients. I was able to serve as a co-PI for a nursing lead research initiative and collaborative effort with rehabilitation department entitled “Motivated and Moving”. This program was initiated in 2010 as an incentive-based mobility program and grant funded via the Daisy Foundation. Results demonstrated potential for patients to spend less days in hospital with higher rates of participation in exercise and rehab activities. This program was presented at the State of the Science Congress on Nursing Research in 2012 and published in 2014 in Cancer Nursing.
Building upon the success of this program, I was invited to work with a multi-departmental team to create the Enhanced Recovery Stem Cell Transplant (ER-SCT) program. The goal of the ER-SCT program was to focus on vulnerable and higher risk SCT patients in developing frailty and worse overall outcomes specific to non-relapse mortality from physical debilitation. Our team defined this vulnerable population as patients receiving and Allogeneic (Allo) SCT aged 65 and older at the time of their transplant due to historically higher rates of non-relapse mortality (NRM) and poorer overall survival (OS) and increasing rates of SCT annually.
