Emily received her Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of Colorado in 2015 and has worked as a center manager and team lead physical therapist with Brooks Rehabilitation. After receiving a microcredential in orientation and mobility through Salus University in the summer of 2024, Emily has expanded her practice to specialize in working with the blind and low vision community to improve fall risk and functional mobility outcomes through targeted balance, gait, strength, and O&M techniques. Emily was diagnosed with Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis at the age of three, and has progressively lost her sight throughout her life with light perception only at present. Emily is one of a handful of blind and low vision healthcare providers in the country, and is a strong advocate for the blind and low vision population in all settings. Emily is also a creator of Insightfully Sightless, and shares her story and disability advocacy information on social media to further equity in healthcare and beyond. Dr. Townsend has spoken regarding healthcare and employment disparities for people with disabilities on the national and international stages; most recently speaking at the American Physical Therapy Association national conference in 2024.
