Be the Change Agent in Your Community Through Advocacy: Creating Patient Resources Where You Live 1964

Research has shown that access to community resources for individuals with disabilities can have long-standing impacts on improved quality of life, mental health, access to care, health and wellness, and socialization. However, many regions worldwide lack robust resources to support community programs. Healthcare providers often ask themselves, "What can we do to support individuals living IN my community?" but do not know where to start. This presentation targets healthcare professionals and leaders who want to advocate for individuals with disabilities by providing resources and starting programs in their community. Attendees will learn why community initiatives are valuable for these populations, strategies to identify gaps in community services, considerations for funding, and program implementation. Presenters will also examine advocacy from a leadership perspective.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe why community resources are valuable to individuals living with a disability. .
  • Discuss at least one strategy to assess and identify community service gaps for individuals living with a disability.
  • Identify considerations for application and program design for community grants projects.
  • Examine advocacy from a leadership perspective and identify resources and efforts internally and at local, state, and national levels
