In this session we will describe how prehabilitation has developed in spinal surgery and introduce the premise that specifying prehabilitation interventions using a common language is preferable at the clinical, research, and educational level. We will introduce the RTSS framework including why including a mechanism of action (MOA) when stating treatment theory is beneficial. We will then discuss elements of uni- and multi-modal prehabilitation, and its specification, for spinal surgery using two published examples we have been involved in. While we explain key concepts, some previous knowledge of the RTSS in clinical practice will be useful.
