He earned his BA in English and Japanese from the University of Notre Dame, completed medical school at KU Medical Center, neurology residency at the University of Virginia, and a postdoctoral fellowship in Alzheimer’s disease at Washington University in St. Louis. He later returned to Kansas City to establish a program dedicated to advancing local Alzheimer’s and aging research, with a focus on how lifestyle factors affect brain aging and disease progression. Under his leadership, the program has grown into a dynamic hub for research and training in Alzheimer’s and brain aging. Since 2005, Dr. Burns has been continuously funded by the NIH as a principal investigator for studies examining the impact of lifestyle on brain health and Alzheimer’s disease.
