The past and Future of Connected Sensor Technologies in Rehabilitation 1188

Digital health technologies encompass electronic tools used in health care, such as mobile health applications, wearables, and patient portals. The variety of available technologies poses a challenge for clinicians aiming to integrate these solutions into practice. An inventory of products and use case scenarios can be a helpful starting point. Thus, this education session aims to present findings from a scoping review on the use of connected sensor technologies in rehabilitation. These technologies, which use mobile sensors to capture and transform data into measures of function, include devices like smartwatches, heart rate monitors, and smart clothing. Preliminary results from 32 studies (43 manuscripts) show that most research occurs in Europe (40.6%) and North America (25.0%). The top patient groups studied are cardiac (18.8%), cancer (15.6%), and orthopedic (15.6%). Sensors are typically combined with telehealth (65.6%) and mobile applications (46.9%). The session will highlight results and use case scenarios in pain management, cardiac rehabilitation, and lower-limb amputation.
