Chair and Professor of Neurology
The University of Florida College of Medicine, Department of Neurology
Gainesville, Florida, United States
I am a board-certified neurologist and internationally recognized expert in brain injury medicine, with additional certifications in psychiatry, sleep medicine, behavioral neurology, neuropsychiatry, and neural repair and rehabilitation. My research has primarily focused on traumatic brain injury (TBI), employing a multidisciplinary approach to develop strategies for assessment and management. During my 21-year career in the United States Air Force, I pioneered the first IRB-approved research in a combat zone, served as the US NATO delegate to the TBI Panel, and was the national director of the Defense & Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC), where I led the largest multi-site RCT of cognitive rehabilitation. I later established the first interdisciplinary TBI Clinic at the University of Virginia and joined the University of Florida (UF) to advance similar research initiatives. At UF, I developed the Trauma, Concussion, & Sports Neuromedicine Program (TRACS), which includes a state-of-the-art concussion research and educational initiative. My contributions extend to projects such as the Interdisciplinary Concussion Databank—a comprehensive study of mild TBI in collegiate athletes—and various trials exploring the relationship between sleep and concussion, and Alzheimer’s disease. I also serve as a Panelist for the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP) and chaired the program from 2015-2020, focusing on TBI and dementia. As Chair of the Department of Neurology at UF and Director of the Brain Injury, Rehabilitation and Neuroresilience (BRAIN) Center, I continue to lead innovations in brain injury medicine and contribute to clinical practice guidelines. I am also the lead author of the book, Navigating the Challenges of Concussion, which offers evidence-based guidance on managing concussions and addresses common misconceptions.
