Emotional changes, such as mood swings, anxiety, frustration, and depression, affect 30-40% of stroke survivors, often complicating communication, daily functioning, and rehabilitation (Cooper et al., 2015; Kim, 2016). Despite their significant impact, these challenges are frequently overlooked in stroke care, leaving survivors and families without adequate resources. Emotional regulation, the ability to identify and manage emotions, is critical for recovery and well-being. Evidence-based strategies like mindfulness, relaxation, journaling, physical activity, creative therapies, and social connection have proven effective in reducing emotional distress and enhancing resilience (Cumming et al., 2016; Chen et al., 2019).
This symposium will equip healthcare professionals with practical tools to help their patients and families address post-stroke emotional changes. It will emphasize self-management techniques, professional support options, and the integration of evidence-based practices, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and emotion-focused therapy.
