From Impact to Recovery: A Holistic Model for Managing Concussion in Athletes 1184

Concussion (mTBI) results from head or body impact that disrupts brain function, affecting physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep domains. With 3-4 million cases annually in the U.S., up to 90% are mild, and 20% have persistent symptoms. Traditional treatments and outdated post-concussion education can contribute to ineffective coping and mismanagement. Athletes face unique challenges in recovery, including social pressures from coaches and teammates to return to play prematurely. These pressures, along with academic stress for student-athletes, can worsen recovery, especially when co-occurring conditions or past injuries are involved. Effective recovery requires collaboration among medical providers, athletic trainers, coaches, and families to address the athlete’s physical, cognitive, and emotional needs. Case studies will highlight the varied recovery outcomes for athletes, including those who return to sport or retire due to repeated injuries.

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to identify sports specific considerations for evaluating and treating an athlete post-concussion.
